ON FOOD: Setting table for 100-mile diet in partnership with libraries

Need diet challenge trailblazers

Have you ever wanted to take a culinary challenge?

Not exactly like being thrown into "Kitchen Stadium" and going up against the likes of Masaharu Morimoto.

I frequently get e-mails asking how to cook healthier.

This is your chance.

Starting June 5, Georgina will start the 100-mile diet challenge.

I have visions of Robert Conrad challenging me to "Knock This Battery Off My Shoulder".

This is not as easy as you would think. In fact, most people would have no idea what food is available within 100 miles.

This is going to take a lot of commitment and creativity.

The Georgina Public Libraries "One Book, One Community" project will be launching the 100-mile challenge June 5 with the Junior Farmers Association of Ontario.

I know what you are thinking ... a couple of kids wearing coveralls talking about how they grow corn. As in cooking, farming is all about science.

Not the weird science that makes naked chicken science. These young people (many with university degrees) can really help you understand some of the science behind getting better yields and growing a better garden. This will take place at Peter Gzowski Sutton Branch Library June 5 from 1 to 2 p.m.

I need some trailblazers who are willing to take the challenge and journal their experiences to help me write about the pitfalls and pluses of the 100-mile diet.

The time to reserve your copy of the book is now.

By doing this, three couples will have an opportunity to win a place at an exclusive A Posh Affair seven -course dinner, plus other great prizes. E-mail me at steve@aposhaffair.ca if you are interested.

We will also be setting up a blog and a wiki that will help you source local ingredients and tips on creating very successful 100-mile dishes.

Some people think by using 100-mile ingredients that somehow the food will ... well, suck. I can tell you that you are in for a surprise.

Along the way, we will be giving cooking advice on preparing new and exciting ingredients that you will love. (And you thought fiddleheads was just a nickname for your boss and his boss?)

I am sure we will have some three stooges cooking moments attempting to make dishes with ingredients we are not familiar with but that is the fun of the challenge.

I will be right there struggling through this challenge with you and some local food stores will be helping you to identify local 100-mile ingredients.
